The foot is an elaborate arrangement of 26 small bones and 33 joints, layered with tendons, ligaments and muscles to facilitate movement of the foot. When the bones of the foot become misaligned due to injury or overuse, nerves become irritated and connective tissue becomes inflamed, causing pain to the foot and surrounding areas.
What are the common causes of foot pain?
Foot pain is often caused by improper and poor alignment of the bone structure. What can cause this? Often times it is due to shoes which are improperly fitted, which cause foot problems. A shoe which fits properly and gives support to the foot and arch reduces the chance for injury.
Other common causes include:
- Stress fractures
- Plantar fasciitis
- Metarsalgia – inflammation of the joints of the ball of the foot
- “Turf toe” – strained tendon under the joint at the base of the big toe
- Sprains and muscle strains
- Achilles tendonitis
Why see a chiropractor for foot pain?
A chiropractor is skilled in helping to alleviate pain associated with the joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments of the ankle and all the muscular skeletal elements of the body. By bringing the foot into alignment through manual manipulation of the bones and joints, circulation is increased, flexibility and range of motion is restored and risk of further injury is reduced.
What can a chiropractor do to help relieve foot pain?
A chiropractor is highly skilled and intensively trained to diagnose and pinpoint the exact location and cause of pain with the help of x-rays and MRI’s and examinations. Through manually adjusting and manipulating the bones of the foot, a chiropractor can reduce tension on the muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves which cause the pain. Bringing the bones and joints into alignment reduces inflammation and helps the body heal naturally, speeding the time for recovery and allowing the patient to return to normal daily activities sooner than without the adjustments.
